Vercel Ship
San Francisco is off the charts.
I spent a day last week at the @vercel Ship event, and I was shocked by the excitement around AI, software, and the future in general.
Here are some of the things I learned:
• Writing code is a solved problem. Trusting the code is not.
• I didn't hear from a single person who thinks software is dead. Actually, the opposite is true: everyone is more excited than ever about the future of building.
• Vercel's @rauchg said all of their numbers are up: 3x more developers, 28x more agentic deployments, 1B deployments every 4 months.
• Agents. Agents. Agents. Nobody wants to talk about anything else. The future is agentic, and every company is looking for ways to architect agentic systems.
• There's a lot of excitement about robotics. Clearly, AI has given this topic a huge boost. Many startups are working on both software and hardware for robots.
• One of the next big things seems to be personalized software. You won't be vibe-coding Photoshop, but Photoshop might use AI to serve you a hyper-personalized UI.
• Citizen developers—we call them vibe-coders—are a security nightmare. Everyone can build an app, but we are seeing a lot of problems when users put their data in unsecured, vibe-coded apps. Vercel talked a lot about this, and how they are embracing citizen developers while adding guardrails.
• There's a big focus on updating the Internet so agents can use it. Agents are quickly becoming the most important online user. Every website should be serving agents. Every company should optimize its services for agents. If you don't cater to agents, you won't matter.
• In Florida, we have billboards about car accident lawyers and notary services. In San Francisco, billboards are about cheaper inference, tokens, and AI strategy.
• I met people who are building software who would never have called themselves developers a year ago. The role has already changed.
• Everyone is excited about what they can do with AI today, but everyone is building for what they expect it to do six months from now.
• I heard the word "distribution" more times than the word "inference". When everyone can build a product, getting people to care about it becomes even harder.
Vercel picked a good name for this event: Ship. You can watch the livestream sessions here: https://t.co/5GbUX76PWY
I've never been more excited to ship something myself.
