Struggling understand why the leader of a major AI lab would go on a press tour and say their technology has a meaningful chance of killing us all. I've read thousands of comments on these interviews from everyday Americans. The sentiment overwhelmingly falls into three categories: 1) Why are you telling us this? We can't do anything about it, you're the one in charge of this tech and you've made billions of dollars developing it. Shut yourself down if it's so dangerous! 2) This is a scam, the "AI bubble" is about to burst and they're trying to make us think AI is more powerful (and valuable) than it really is to trick investors into continuing to support them. 3) This is a doomsday scenario and we should act accordingly by bombing the data centers and killing the people in charge. The third category is thankfully the minority (but still frightening). But none of these are good, and they don't engender confidence.
