StepFun releases open-source Step Code CLI agent under MIT License
The release joins a crowded field of open-source coding agents from Chinese labs, including MiniMax Code, Zhipu's ZCode, Qwen Code, Kimi Code and DeepSeek's DSH, giving developers more MIT-licensed CLI options to self-host or benchmark. Since the Multi-Frame score comes from StepFun's own benchmark, cross-checking it against Terminal-Bench results from rival agents is the practical way to compare. The 75-day Plus subscription also offers a low-cost way to test Step 5 Preview before committing.
StepFun (StepFun AI) released Step Code v0.1.0 as an open-source coding agent under the MIT License. The CLI handles the full development loop, from reading and editing code to running tests and shipping. It scored 80.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 73.3% on Multi-Frame, the company's own 150-task long-horizon benchmark. It also supports one-command static site publishing via StepPage. StepFun is also running a promotion offering 75-day Plus subscriptions bundled with Step 5 Preview.
