Open-source Rust clone of Anthropic's Scion source control lands
Server-first version control designed for always-on agents, rather than local-first workflows for humans, could reshape how coding agents manage repos at scale. Developers building agent frameworks should note the trade-offs: faster imports but slower single-file commits. Roadmap items include regional caching, daemon snapshot bootstrapping, virtualised checkout, filesystem watcher and copy detection.
A developer has independently re-implemented and open-sourced Scion, Anthropic's source control architecture, in Rust. The clone already runs a complete agent source management workflow covering server-side commits, sparse checkout, remote history queries and concurrent merges. It splits responsibilities differently from Git: the server holds full history and handles Commit, Rebase and Merge, while agent clients fetch only the code and state needed per task instead of cloning whole repositories. On an Apple M4 Pro with 24GB, synthetic tests with 1k-10k files showed directory imports about 7.8-11.5x faster than Git and full checkouts about 1.4x faster, though single-file commits remain slower and sparse checkout at 10k files trails slightly.
Scion
