China's first mandatory national standard on safety requirements for L3/L4 automated driving systems was published in August 2026 and is planned to take effect on 1 July 2027. In addition, a draft mandatory standard on vehicle external lighting specifies that only vehicles with L3 or higher ADS may install the blue ADS marker lamp.

What it means for you

  • From 1 July 2027, L3/L4 automated driving systems must meet the mandatory safety requirements; non-compliant models cannot be sold.
  • Automakers and suppliers planning L3/L4 production must complete safety design, validation and type-approval compliance work before the effective date.
  • The lighting standard requires vehicle exterior design to accommodate the ADS marker lamp, which only L3+ vehicles may install.
