Planet Labs recently became one of the first companies to successfully run AI image processing directly aboard an Earth observation satellite. The milestone could shrink the gap between data capture and actionable insight from hours to minutes. On March 25, the company’s Pelican-4 satellite captured imagery of an airport in Alice Springs, Australia, from roughly 500 kilometers up, then used an onboard Nvidia Jetson Orin module to detect more than a dozen aircraft in half a second. The breakthrough, which took 18 months of engineering, achieved 80% detection accuracy on raw imagery. Planet Labs plans to expand the capability across its upcoming Owl constellation, eventually creating an autonomous satellite network that can flag events like wildfires, crop damage, and natural disasters in near real time.
