This is a big deal. With Seedance 2.5 you'll be able to buy a pass to use copyrighted material. ByteDance gets a cut that goes to the owner.
I'm surprised no other lab has done this yet. Suno will likely do this when they release their licensed model. If ByteDance proves this works financially, every other lab will scramble to implement it.
I've been waiting for AI to have some sort of system for using copyrighted material for quite a long time. I'm expecting the same for music soon - I'd love to be able to remix tracks.
But the questions remain:
- What's the pricing model - flat fee, per-use, subscription tiers? - How much material will actually be available to us? - How does it work across different countries? What works in China might not fly in the EU or US. - Does this cover just visual style, or actual trademarked characters/IP? - Can creators opt out, or is this tied to existing platform deals? - What happens to content you've already created if your pass expires?
The cross-border question is massive. ByteDance has experience navigating this with TikTok, but AI-generated content using licensed IP is uncharted territory legally.
Music rights are probably why we haven't seen this yet - mechanical, performance, sync, and master recordings are all separate. The licensing nightmare is worse than images or video.
