US and China will hold AI talks in September, according to sources who spoke to Reuters.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the US delegation. The talks will be the first official AI dialogue under Trump and are expected to take place before Xi Jinping's planned September 24 visit to the US.
Bessent confirmed US concerns in a Fox Business interview today, saying they're finding watermarks of US language models on Chinese models. "That's unacceptable. We're going to be looking at that in the coming days or weeks."
The talks follow both sides weighing restrictions on each other's models. Chinese authorities are considering curbs on overseas access to their most powerful models, while the US has been debating procurement rules and Entity List additions to limit Chinese models.
Open-weight models sit at the centre of both discussions. Beijing wants clarity on whether Washington will restrict Chinese open-weight models. The US wants assurances on how China will control future frontier model releases.
