UCL researchers built an AI that watches brain surgery as it happens, and it just assisted a real operation for the first time. Surgeons at UCLH threaded a camera through the patient's nose to the base of the skull, where a tumor on his pituitary gland was pressing on his optic nerves. The patient had suffered a seizure and was losing his vision. The tumor sat just millimeters from the carotid arteries, making it extremely difficult to remove safely. So surgeons added AI to the process, with a model watching the live video feed to track instruments and flag where vessels and nerves were in real time. The AI "is trained on more operations than most surgeons see or do in a lifetime and can act like an expert second pair of eyes," neurosurgeon Hani Marcus said. The patient's vision returned within days following the successful surgery, and a larger trial is now in the works. "It's given me my life back." 💬 0 🔄 0 ❤️ 0 👀 887 ⚡
