Epoch AI Launches SpireClimb Benchmark for Slay the Spire

Why we picked it

Progress on a single long-horizon game is a proxy for how quickly agentic planning and decision-making capabilities are moving, and SpireClimb gives teams a repeatable way to measure that gap across model releases. Practitioners benchmarking agents on sequential decision tasks can use the difficulty tiers to compare models beyond static Q&A tests. Tracking which labs' models clear the hardest difficulty will be a useful signal in coming releases.

Epoch AI released SpireClimb, a new benchmark that tests frontier AI models on the roguelike deck-builder Slay the Spire. According to Epoch, six months ago frontier models could barely beat the game. On the new benchmark, top models now win over 90% of runs at the easiest difficulty and up to 20% of runs at the hardest difficulty. The results quantify rapid progress in agentic game-playing performance over half a year.
