Emad Mostaque's claim that US providers could serve Kimi K3 at one tenth the price of Chinese competitors is overstated. The real number looks closer to 2 to 5 times cheaper, not 10x.

Electricity costs work against the US. Chinese industrial rates sit around 6 cents per kWh with some subsidies in key zones, while US data centres average closer to 9 cents. That 50 percent premium matters when power makes up roughly a quarter of inference costs.

The US advantage lives in hardware efficiency. Blackwell systems deliver roughly double the usable compute per watt versus current Huawei Ascend clusters. Mature tooling on Nvidia hardware has shown 2 to 5x cost drops on similar large MoE models in weeks once weights are open.

China holds advantages in data centre build costs and labour, but silicon efficiency tends to outweigh them for frontier inference. The realistic net for well tuned US hosting sits at 2 to 5x cheaper.

The gap will shift as new Ascend chips arrive and providers tune K3, but hardware access remains the structural factor is still key.
