OpenScience agent outscores Codex and Claude Code on science benchmarks

An Apache 2.0 agent beating proprietary coding agents on science benchmarks changes the calculus for labs that cannot ship data to closed platforms. Teams running research automation can self-host it and plug in whichever model they already pay for. The comparison set — Codex and Claude Code — makes the leaderboard claims directly checkable against tools practitioners use daily.

Claude Code Effort Settings Explained by Anthropic Team Member

Effort levels mainly control how much verification, edge-case testing and decision-making Claude does for you — the vaguer the requirement, the more the levels diverge in output. Developers can speed up iteration by drafting at low effort, then raising it only for validation-heavy work on codebases like legacy bug fixes. Mid-conversation switching without cache loss is limited to Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, so users on older models should set the level before starting a session.
